Hello, my friends! This is Dori @redfeedsack… I’m here to talk about a project I’ve wanted to make literally for years. It has greatly intimidated me.. and honestly I felt like it would just frustrate me too much to make it worth trying. I’m talking about the Jelly Roll Rug. It is kind of like the old fashioned braided rug but all done on the sewing machine. I could see how sewing fabric and batting strips in a large circle or oblong shape could easily get wonky, and I just wasn’t sure I wanted to spend that kind of time and fabric just to end up with a rug that wasn’t usable! I’ve sewn rope baskets before and so I know that my sewing machine can handle the bulk, but I also know that it’s easy to end up with some frustrating issues with a bobbin knotting up, etc…
But then… Therm O Web has a great new product called Bliss for Jelly Rolls, and I knew the time had come for me to make the rug! The most wonderful new Bliss 100% Cotton Batting is used in these rolls of 2.25 inch precut batting strips. (In case you missed it, last month I talked about how amazing this quilt batting is… it is my favorite batting!!) So to have it all cut and ready in a 50-yard roll of a perfect strip… well; it was my sign! (Look how beautiful that roll of batting is!!! It might look like it’s a mess on my floor but actually it’s exactly where I wanted it! Smile!)
I’ve written a tutorial of sorts that shares my experience in making the rug and a few things I learned and will do differently next time. And YES! There will be more Jelly Roll Rugs in my future!
