Thimbelina's Quilted Zipper Pouch

by Deb Zaleski on December 29, 2025
Hello Therm O Web Friends! At the beginning of the month, I posted about the Patchwork Pincushion. I also promised to share another tutorial featuring the Thimbelina and the Sewing Fairies Fabric Collection by Jennifer Long of Sew A Story for Riley Blake Designs. Today is all about the Quilted Zipper Pouch, a cute, boxy pouch that's perfect for all those little accessories!
SUPPLIES FOR THE QUILTED ZIPPER POUCH:
TOOLS:

GETTING STARTED:

1. Make a quilt sandwich measuring 26" x 10" with an exterior fabric, sew-in fleece, and a lining fabric. Here are a few tips: Use SpraynBond basting spray to keep all the layers in place while quilting. For straight lines, I recommend using a walking foot on your sewing machine. I also like using an embroidery machine to stitch a quilted design. 2. Download and print the Quilted zipper pouch pattern. Print actual size – DO NOT “fit to page” or “shrink to fit.” 3. Cut two template shapes out of the quilt sandwich. In addition, cut one 2.5-inch-wide strip from width of fabric (42 inches long). 4. To form the binding, fold the 2.5-inch strip in half lengthwise and press. Open the fold, bring the edges to the center, and press again. 5. Stitch the binding to the top edge of each pouch piece. Place the two pouch pieces right sides together and stitch them together using a 1/4" seam allowance. Finish off the bottom raw edge with binding.
ZIPPER PLACEMENT:
6. Place the top of the pouch over the zipper and sew along one side. Then, line up the second side of the pouch over the zipper and stitch it. 7. Cut off 5 inches of the 2.5-inch strip. Top stitch down each side, then cut the strip in half to create two zipper tabs. Next, stitch each tab to the ends of the zipper. 8. Leave the zipper open at least halfway. Then, turn your work inside out and align the bottom with the top. Stitch with a 1/4" seam allowance and repeat on the other side. Finish off the raw edge with binding. 9. Line up the four corners and stitch using a 1/4" seam allowance. Once again, finish the raw edges with binding. Turn the pouch right side out. Thank you for joining me.
