To begin, gather your supplies. You will need several prints of fabrics for the body and fins, as well as Stitch n' Sew fleece for stability and strength. Hand draw a whale pattern on a piece of computer paper or download a free version from the internet.
Fold the body fabric together, with right sides facing. Pin the pattern to the fabric, and cut it out. Repeat the process with the fleece, so that you end up with two body pieces cut from print, and two from fleece.
Turn the printed fabric to the right side. Cut a 1" circle from Stitch n' Sew™ Fleece, and stitch it to the top of the whale's head for the eye. Cut a smaller circle from black fabric, and adhere the pupil to the eye using Therm O Web Fabric Fuse™ liquid adhesive.
Place the print whale pieces together, with right sides facing. Sandwich these between the two layers of fleece. Pin the pieces together, and then sew around the edge using a 1/4" seam allowance, leaving an ~ 3" opening to turn the body. Make small clips around the whale with a sharp scissor about 1" apart, making sure not to cut into the seam.
Turn and stuff the body, and then stitch the opening closed using a whip stitch. Hand stitch a mouth onto the whale using three strands of black embroidery floss.
Repeat the above process to create fins for the whale, using a contrasting printed fabric. Leave the flat end of the fin open for turning. Add decorative top stitching to the fins once turned, and then stitch them onto the whale body.
