Hi Friends! It’s Lisa Ruble from Quilty Zest and I have been waiting to share this pencil case with you - it turned out even cuter than I imagined! I first came up with the idea while school supply shopping with my boys. And now I’m sharing the tutorial here with you!
Here’s what you’ll need:
* Fabric, fat eighth each pink, gray, yellow, white and black - I used Mini Cabins Rose, Hexie Pops Gray, Mini Cabins Butter, Sparkle Dot White and Party Geese Black, all from my new Refresh fabric collection from Benartex.
* Fabric, fat quarter Stitching Lines Orchid for lining (Refresh from Benartex)
* HeatnBond VersaFoam Double-Sided Fusible Foam Stabilizer
* Fabric marking pen
* 12” zipper
Cutting:
From Mini Cabins Rose: (1) 3” x 10” piece and (1) 2-½” x 4-½” piece
From Hexie Pops Gray: (1) 2” x 10” piece
From Mini Cabins Butter: (1) 5-½” x 10” piece
From Sparkle Dot White: (1) 2” x 10” piece
From Party geese Black: (1) 2” x 10” piece and (1) 2-½” square
From Stitching Lines Orchid: (1) 10” x 12-½” piece
From VersaFoam: (1) 10” x 12-½” piece
Make the Pencil Case:
Step 1: Sew together the 3” x 10” pink, 2” x 10” gray, 5-½” x 10” yellow, 2” x 10” white and 2” x 10” black pieces along long edges to make the pieced pencil.
Step 2: Fuse the pencil top to the VersaFoam, using Pressing Paper as you press. Fuse the 10” x 12-½” lining piece to the opposite side.
Step 3: Machine quilt the pencil rectangle. I recommend using a walking foot and light gray thread.
Step 4: Fold the 2-½” x 4-½” pink piece in half and press. Fold in ¼” on both short ends and press. Repeat with the 2-½” black square.
Step 5: Tuck the top end of the zipper into the folded pink piece as shown. Stitch across directly above the top of the zipper to secure the ends within the pink piece.
Step 6: Lay the zipper next to the quilted pencil, aligning the pink edges. Mark the zipper at the opposite end where the quilted pencil ends.
Step 7: Stitch ¼” above the marked line. Trim the zipper on the marked line.
Step 8: Add the folded black piece to the bottom end of the zipper in the same manner as in step 5. Your zipper with fabric rectangles should measure the same length as the quilted pencil.
Step 9: Using a zipper foot on your sewing machine, sew one side of the zipper to one side of the quilted pencil. 
Step 10: Open the zipper. Sew the opposite side of the zipper to the opposite side of the quilted pencil (creating a tube). Use a serger or zig zag foot on your home sewing machine to cover the raw edges shown.
Step 11: Flatten the pencil “tube” so the zipper is centered on one side. Stitch across the pink end of the pencil to create one end of the case. Use a serger or a zig zag stitch on your home machine to cover the raw edges. 
Step 12: Measure up 3-½” from the black end of the pencil case and mark a line. Draw lines from the center of the black “tip” to the sides where the marked lines meet (see green marks below). Stitch on those lines. 
Step 13: Trim off corners ¼” past stitching lines. Serge or zig zag stitch raw edges. 
Step 14: Turn the pencil case right side out, gently poke the pencil tip out, and enjoy!
