What you need (for one bag):
How to make a Sweet Treats Goodie Bag
4 ½” W x 6” H (when flat)
1. Download and print the Sweet Treat Goodie Bag PDF.
Sweet Treats Goodie Bag - A Project for the Therm O Web Blog
- Print at actual size – do NOT “fit to page” or “shrink to fit.”
- Print page 1 on regular printer paper.
- Print page 2 on a sheet of HeatnBond Lite EZ-Print Iron-On Adhesive Sheet or print on regular printer paper and trace the template onto HeatnBond Lite.
2. Prepare Heart for Appliqué
- Apply HeatnBond Fire Truck Sparkle Paste to a 3¼” square of white fabric. Use a small foam brush to apply and experiment with the sparkle paste until you achieve your desired look.
- Protect work surface with HeatnBond Pressing Paper. PRO TIP: Work on one side of the pressing paper, then cover with the other side when pressing.
- Apply your preferred amount of Sparkle Paste to the fabric using a brush or palette knife. Wash the tools immediately afterward in warm, soapy water.
- Let dry 1 hour.
- Preheat dry iron to the cotton setting (high heat), no steam. Cover the design with HeatnBond Pressing Paper and press with medium firm pressure for 60 seconds.
- Let the Sparkle Paste cure for 24 hours. The Sparkle Paste will now be permanent and machine washable. The durable glittery finish won’t flake off and will withstand frequent use and handling.
- Apply HeatnBond Lite Iron-On Adhesive to the back of the 3¼” square of white fabric that has been treated with Sparkle Paste.
- Print the heart templates on a sheet of HeatnBond Lite EZ-Print Iron-On Adhesive Sheet or print on regular printer paper and trace desired template on HeatnBond Lite Iron-On Adhesive with a pencil.
- Pre-heat the iron to medium heat, no steam.
- Place traced heart template on the wrong side of the fabric (printed paper, smooth side should be face up).
- Place and hold the iron on the paper for 2-3 seconds.
- Allow it to cool.
- Cut or trim the heart along the traced line to create the desired shape. Leave paper in place until ready to fuse in place.
3. Prepare Fabric for Bag
- Center and apply HeatnBond Medium Weight Non-Woven Fusible Interfacing to the back of cotton fabric selected for the bag.
- Pre-heat iron to a high setting, no steam.
- Place the rough side of the fusible interfacing against the wrong side of the bag fabric – center it carefully.
- Cover with a lightweight, dry pressing cloth.
- Press and hold iron with medium pressure for 10-15 seconds. Lift and move the iron to the next section, slightly overlapping previous area, until the entire surface is bonded.
- Allow it to cool completely.
- Measure 2” from each short edge and draw a line with pencil.
- Make an ⅛” cut at the beginning and the end of each line (one ⅛” cut 2” from each corner on the long sides)
4. Apply Appliqué Heart
- With wrong sides together, fold the fabric in half by bringing the short sides together; the fold will be the bottom of the bag.
- Remove the paper backing and center the heart between ¾” and 1” from the fold.
- Fuse in place.
- Preheat iron to medium heat, no steam.
- Remove paper backing from the heart shape.
- Place the heart, adhesive side down, on front of folded fabric for bag.
- Press and hold iron for 6-8 seconds on each section until the entire shape is bonded.
- Allow it to cool.
5. Construct the bag
- With wrong sides together, sew down both sides from the cut to the fold using an ⅛” seam allowance.
- Tun the bag wrong sides out (right sides together) and press.
- Sew down each side from the drawn line (cut) to the fold with a ¼” seam allowance.
- Turn the bag right side out and press.
6. Make the Casing
- Line up the sides of the top section (above the cut) with the side seams and press.
- Fold the top edge over ¼” and press.
- Fold the top over to the drawn line and press.
- Top stitch ⅛” from the bottom of the casing.
- Repeat for the other side of the bag.
7. Add Drawstrings
- Thread one piece of baker’s twine, cord, or ribbon through one side of the casing (leaving a tail) and then through the other side, so both ends of the cord come out on the same side of the bag. Use a bodkin or a safety pin to make threading easier. Knot the ends together securely.
- Repeat with the second piece of baker’s twine, starting on the opposite side of the bag.
