Carla, here from Creatin' in the Sticks and I'm squealing with delight. I'm excited to show a couple of the stylish separates I was able to create from Anna's new book. Thermoweb has products to make sewing the designs even easier. I'm excited to be here to share a few tips and tricks when stitching small and with knits.
It's no secret that I have two passions, sewing creative designs and creating fun hairstyles. This project allowed me to combine both of my loves and make a little outfit for an 18" doll that any hairstylist would love to wear.
Every fashion in the book, My Doll, My Style, has fabric suggestions. Make both the tunic and the skirt with knit fabric. Thermoweb has a product that makes hemming knits so easy. It is HeatNBond Soft Stretch Hem tape and is available in lite which is sewable and ultra which is a wonderful no-sew option. Trim the tape to the width needed. Even the narrowest hems with knit fabrics are a cinch.
The tunic and the skirt lining were both hemmed with HeatNBond Soft Stretch Hem tape lite and then the hems were stitched with a stretch stitch with Aurifil thread – 50 wt. # 2620. The lace overlay on both the tunic and the skirt are sewn with Aurifil thread – 50 wt. # 2692.
Sometimes when stitching knit fabric sewing machine needles push the fabric into the throat plate. A ballpoint needle will help, but not always. One trick is to use a fabric stabilizer to stitch the seams. StitchNSew Non-Woven Tear-Away Stabilizer provides support and is easily removed by tearing away.
Doll clothes are perfect to practice this technique. Just place the StitchNSew Non-Woven Tear-Away Stabilizer under the project, sew the seams with a stretch stitch, and then simply tear away the stabilizer. The seams are perfect.
