Sew, Carry, Share: The Ultimate Casserole Carrier

by Dori Troutman on April 30, 2026

Hello my sewing friends! This is Dori with The Red Feedsack here to share a really fun project for the summer. I don’t know how it is where you live, but nice weather in Tennessee usually means gatherings with friends… and that always involves food! I was recently looking for an insulated casserole carrier and could not find anything pretty! And well… you know me… if it’s not bright happy colors; I’m not happy! So I designed one and sewed up a tutorial just for you! Let’s get sewing, so you are ready for Potluck Season! (Yes, that is a season!!)

This pattern uses two forms of insulation; you will want to use them both in order to make it truly a hot or cold safe carrier. The first form of insulation is called Insul-Bright which you can buy online or in most stores that sell interfacing. This is an actual needled insulated batting made specifically for projects like this. The second form of insulation is HeatnBond Fusible Fleece. I have found this fleece batting to work amazingly well as an insulation and you may not even need the Insul-Bright. However, I chose to use both for this project. Not only will it keep your casserole warm and toasty, it also creates a soft carrier that protects the glass dish.

Another question for you to consider is what fabric will you use for this project? You could easily use two large pieces of fabric: one for the outer piece and one for the lining. But because I really like the farmhouse quilted look I wanted something scrappy and quilt looking! So I chose to use a fabric Rolie Polie. For those of you that might not be familiar with a Jelly Roll or a Rolie Polie … it is simply a roll of 2.5” x 44” fabric strips. Most fabric stores sell them. I decided to use a Rolie Polie from Riley Blake Designs called Farmer’s Daughter. You won’t use every one of the strips in this collection, so you’ll have some strips left over for another project! (You can also cut your own long 2.5” strips from your fabric of choice.)

Your supplies are simple but important:

So, once you’ve made your fabric choice and gathered your supplies, the next step is to download my step by step project tutorial by clicking here.
