I love creating projects that are both beautiful and practical, and the Nutcracker Backpack is one of those projects that you can enjoy using long after you've finished sewing it. Whether you're packing supplies for a sewing retreat, carrying holiday activities for children, or looking for a festive everyday bag, this backpack is designed to be both functional and full of personality.
I created this backpack using fabrics from my Nutcracker Tradition collection. The cheerful Nutcracker appliqué on the front, roomy pockets, and adjustable straps make it a project you'll enjoy sewing from start to finish. With the help of a few of my favorite Therm O Web products, the backpack has the structure and durability needed for everyday use while maintaining a soft, handmade feel.
These products work together to provide stability, structure, and beautiful appliqué details throughout the backpack.
Begin by fusing HeatnBond Fusible Fleece to the exterior backpack pieces following the manufacturer's instructions. This gives the backpack body and softness while helping it hold its shape.
Fuse HeatnBond Firm Fusible Non-Woven Interfacing to the lining pieces and pocket sections to provide additional stability and durability.
The Nutcracker appliqué is one of my favorite details on this backpack.
Trace each appliqué template onto HeatnBond Lite Iron-On Adhesive, fuse it to the wrong side of your fabrics following the manufacturer's instructions, then cut out each shape. Remove the paper backing and fuse the pieces onto the backpack front before stitching around each edge with your favorite appliqué stitch.
Layering the appliqué pieces creates a cheerful Nutcracker that becomes the centerpiece of the backpack.
Sew the front and back panels, pockets, zipper gusset, and side sections together following the pattern instructions. Topstitch around the zipper for a clean, professional finish while helping it lie flat during use.
As the backpack comes together, the Therm O Web stabilizers help each section maintain its shape without becoming bulky.
Attach the adjustable shoulder straps and carrying handle before joining the final sections of the backpack. Taking a little extra time to reinforce these seams helps create a backpack that is ready for everyday adventures.
Complete the final assembly by attaching the binding and turning the backpack right side out. Give everything a final press and enjoy watching your Nutcracker Backpack come to life.
One of my favorite things about this backpack is how many ways it can be used.
