Quilt Blocks as Art: Building a Cozy Gallery Wall

by Dori Troutman on July 16, 2026

Hello my sewing friends!  This is Dori @redfeedsack with the funnest project for you today!  I recently really enjoyed sewing some quilt blocks with a little idea in the back of my mind on possibly framing them… but still a little uncertain!  The fabric I was using was a mix of all my favorite colors and because it had a little old fashioned feel to it, I chose to sew vintage star quilt blocks.  I also knew that in one way or another I would be quilting these little blocks.  I gathered all my supplies and got started.

Several of the blocks I planned to make were tiny (4" square) and I knew that using the foundation paper piecing method would be the best idea for tiny blocks like that.  There are some really amazing YouTube tutorials online and if you’ve never tried FPP before, this project is the time!

I highly recommend watching a few videos and then gather your supplies and try it!  You’ll be hooked.  The game changer here of course is Therm O Web’s Foundation Piecing Stabilizer.  It makes all the difference.  Instead of paper (like most FPP methods recommend) it is a tear away stabilizer.  And it works so incredibly well.

Once I had a handful of different style and size quilt blocks complete, I used Therm O Web 100% Cotton Bliss Batting and hand quilted each block.  At that point I felt very confident about my decision to frame them.

I am so happy with the final product and I’ve written a tutorial with some details and some tips to help you do one as well!  This project is really perfect for beginner quilters, as you are working with one block at a time, versus an entire quilt.  It really is fun and very satisfying!

Thank you for following along and be sure to tag me on IG @redfeedsack if you make this project!
