After making my Nutcracker Tradition throw pillows last month, I wanted to explore another way to showcase this beautiful collection by Jennifer Long. This time, I created a set of quilted Christmas stockings using the quilt-as-you-go method.
I love how this technique allows each fabric strip to shine while creating a beautiful quilted texture at the same time. The combination of soft pinks, rich reds, and festive Nutcracker prints came together to create stockings that feel both traditional and whimsical, the perfect handmade addition to holiday decorating.
Gather your supplies, and let's get started.
1. Download and print the Patchwork Stocking pattern. Print actual size – do NOT “fit to page” or “shrink to fit.” Assemble the pattern to create the full template.

2. Using a diamond-shaped quilter’s ruler, decide which parts of the panel you would like to showcase on your throw pillow. Take your time positioning the ruler to make the most of each design element. I used a water-soluble fabric pen to mark my cutting lines, carefully selecting the perfect placement for each nutcracker and other details I wanted to highlight on my stockings.
3. Using a rotary cutter and a quilter's ruler, cut 2" strips from the width of the fabric in coordinating fabrics.
4. Use the stocking pattern piece to ensure you cut a large enough rectangle from the Bliss Cotton Batting.
5. Find the center of the Bliss Cotton Batting rectangle, then baste the diamond shape onto it.
6. Place a 2-inch strip along one side of the diamond, then stitch along the dashed line, as shown in the image. Trim the strip as needed to ensure full coverage of the side of the diamond, then flip it open and press.
7. Repeat the steps for the other sides until the stocking is fully covered. Trim and press after stitching each strip in place.

9. Using a ¼” guide, I topstitched the stocking front. You can choose another way to add a quilted aspect and texture to your stocking front.
10. Baste the cotton batting to the wrong side of the stocking back. Place the front of the stocking over the back with the right sides facing each other. Leave the top open and stitch around the perimeter using a ¼” seam allowance.
11. Take the lining pieces and sew around the perimeter leaving the top open and leaving an opening between the marks as shown in the image. Use a ⅜” seam allowance on the lining.
12. Take the 2” x 5” rectangle, fold it in half widthwise. Then fold in the two raw edges to the center.
13. Topstitch ⅛” away from the edge along the sides of the fold.
14. Place the loop on the right side of the stocking exterior back. Baste in place.
15. Turn the exterior stocking inside out and the lining right side out. Insert the lining into the exterior stocking making sure to match up the back and front stocking to its lining. Match the side seams. Pin or clip everything in place and then stitch the top all the way around using a ¼” seam allowance.
16. Turn your work right side out through the hole in the lining. Smooth rounded edges and press if needed. Close up the opening using a ladder stitch by hand or by stitching close to the edge with your sewing machine.
17. Push the lining all the way into the toe of the stocking and press the top opening. Topstitch around the top at ¼” away from the edge.
