Patchwork Christmas Pillow Cover with Fusible Fleece

I’ve been making a lot of these lately and they’ve been getting great feedback so I thought I’d share how I make them. They are made using my favorite size square, 3.5-inch. In my opinion it’s the perfect fussy cutting size which I absolutely love to do. I have a great love for collecting Christmas fabrics so I use 36 different prints. You can of course repeat your prints. Let’s get sewing.

Supplies:

  • 20”x20” square of HeatnBond Fusible Fleece
  • Thirty-six 3.5” squares of cotton fabric
  • One 18” or longer zipper
  • Two 10”x18.5” rectangles medium-weight backing fabric

To fussy cut your 3.5” squares I prefer using a 28mm rotary cutter and a 3.5” square Omnigrip clear ruler. It makes it quick and easy.

Once you have all your squares ready to go, lay them out in a 6 across by 6 down square.

Sew the squares together by row then column.

Next, take your HeatnBond Fusible Fleece and lay your finished patchwork square on top. Slowly press the fabric, fusing it to the fleece. I like to use my smallest iron and start on the top row and work my way down. (The fleece is larger than your fabric).

Now take your patchwork pillow top to your sewing machine and quilt the fabric to the fusible fleece. Once finished, trim the excess fleece. Your square should now measure around 18.5”.

You can make an envelope style backing or add a zipper. To add a zipper, gather the two 10”x18.5” backing panels and your zipper.

Place the zipper on top of one 18.5” long side of the first panel, right sides together, and using a zipper foot attach the zipper. I use a zigzag stitch along the raw edge of the fabric to finish it.

Then press the panel flat so the zipper is laying flat and top stitch.

Repeat with the opposite side.

Lay the backing (with the zipper installed) on top of the patchwork top, right sides together. Make sure the zipper lines up with the center of your patchwork on the top and bottom. Pin around the perimeter. Trim any excess backing fabric from the outside edges. Sew around the perimeter. Zigzag around the outside to lock in the raw edges.

Turn right side out and press. Ta-da! Now all you need is a pillow form. This pillow cover size fits perfectly on the large Ikea pillow forms. Display and enjoy. Thanks so much for sewing along with me!
