Make a Soft, Structured Quilted Bible Cover

This month I’m sharing a beginner-friendly project that combines simple quilting with a few helpful touches for making something both useful and personal. The Quilted Bible Cover is a great way to protect a treasured book or notebook and makes a thoughtful handmade gift. The version I created here uses the Created With Love fabric collection and three of my favorite Therm O Web products to give the cover and bookmark structure, softness, and support. This is a great weekend project, and once you’ve made one, it’s easy to customize for other books too.

Materials You’ll Need

Fabric and Supplies:

Created With Love 5-Inch Stacker
Spine Fabric: C15976-SKY
Lining and Pocket Fabric: C15970-GRASS
Button and elastic for the closure
Tassel for the bookmark
Basic sewing tools

Therm O Web Products:

HeatnBond Fusible Fleece – for the inside of the cover panel
HeatnBond Light Weight Non-Woven Fusible Interfacing – for stabilizing the pockets and bookmark
HeatnBond Fabric Fuse – optional, for anchoring elastic or adding support to tricky spots

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Measure Your Book Use a flexible tape to measure the height and full width (front, spine, and back) of your book or Bible. These numbers will guide the size of your patchwork, spine, and lining pieces. 2. Piece the Outer Cover Arrange and sew together 2½" squares from your 5-Inch Stacker to create the front and back cover panels. Then sew the spine fabric between them to form one long rectangle.

3. Add Fusible Fleece Fuse a piece of HeatnBond Fusible Fleece to the wrong side of the full outer cover. Quilt as desired. 4. Make the Bookmark Fuse strips of non-woven fusible interfacing to two bookmark rectangles. Add a tassel and elastic if desired. Sew, turn, and topstitch to finish.

5. Make the Lining and Pockets Fuse interfacing to the wrong side of your pocket rectangles. Fold and press in half with right sides out, then baste to each short end of the lining rectangle.

6. Assemble the Cover Layer the cover and lining with right sides together. Tuck in the elastic closure, button, and bookmark between the layers. Sew around the perimeter, leaving a small turning gap.

7. Finish and Turn Trim corners, turn the cover right side out, and use a hemostat or turning tool to push out the edges. Press and topstitch to close the opening.

8. Slide On and Use Insert the front and back covers of your book into the interior pockets. It’s ready to gift or keep.

Optional Ideas

You can personalize your Bible cover with:

A name label or embroidered verse
A felt or fabric applique on the front
Coordinating thread for decorative topstitching
