Make a Mushroom Pillow for Cozy, Imaginative Corners

by Jennifer Long on January 13, 2026
by Jennifer Long of Sew A Story There’s something really magical about sewing for a child’s space. Whether it’s a cozy reading nook, a child’s bedroom, or a quiet corner for play, the Mushroom Pillow is one of those projects that helps transform a space into something imaginative and full of charm. This pattern includes two sizes: tall and short, and is designed to work beautifully with small-scale prints like those in my Thimbelina fabric collection. You can mix and match tops and stems to create your own whimsical mushroom shapes, then decorate them with embroidery, ribbon, or a little sparkle paste. For this project, I paired the softness of quilting cotton with Therm O Web’s Fusible Fleece to give each pillow structure and dimension, while still keeping it soft and squeezable.

Materials You’ll Need

Fabric & Supplies:
  • Assorted Thimbelina collection prints (fat quarters and fat eighths)
  • Stuffing (polyester fiber fill)
  • Embroidery floss (optional)
  • Basic sewing tools, thread, scissors
  • Turning tool or Quilty Hemostat (not required, but helpful)
Therm O Web Products:
  • HeatnBond Fusible Fleece – used in all the main sections to add structure to the top, stem, and undercap
  • Optional: Fabric Fuse – helpful for temporarily placing embellishments before stitching

Step-by-Step Highlights

1. Prepare and Fuse

Fuse HeatnBond Fusible Fleece to the back of your top, undercap, and stem fabric pieces. This gives the mushrooms a soft, quilted texture and a bit of structure.

2. Assemble the Mushroom Top

Sew four top panels together, then join the top to the undercap. Clip curves and press the seams open to help the shape form evenly.

3. Create and Stuff the Cap

Turn the cap right side out and stuff it evenly. A turning tool or hemostat can help you reach the edges and shape it smoothly.

4. Sew and Shape the Stem

Sew the stem with right sides together, clip and turn, then fill with stuffing. The fusible fleece helps the stem stand upright while staying soft to the touch.

5. Attach and Finish

Stitch the base of the stem to the mushroom top using a ladder stitch. Add any final decorative touches you’d like: embroidered stars, ribbon around the stem, or tiny felt dots.

Style It in Your Home

These pillows are not just for play. They also make a sweet statement in:
  • Woodland nurseries
  • Cozy reading corners
  • Seasonal shelf displays
  • Quiet-time corners in classrooms or bedrooms
They make wonderful handmade gifts too.
