Hello and welcome!
My name is Julia and I am from Inflorescence Designs. I am so excited to be here. Today I am sharing my first project as a Thermoweb Educational Design Team Member. To say that I am excited is an understatement. I have loved being creative my whole life and getting to share what I love with you is absolutely amazing!
My fiber art passion runs deep. I enjoy crochet, dying fabric, sewing, quilting and more. I really enjoy designing quilt blocks and quilt patterns to share and today I will be teaching you how to make a fabulous quilt inspired by the coming new year.
Intermediate Sewing Skills:
I recommend intermediate sewing skills due to this quilt being sewn almost completely on the bias. In addition, I recommend not trimming any of the dog ears and because of this, the seams look a little crazy at times. However, this is just a suggestion. The hexagon star quilt is 68" long by 50" wide. That includes the side sashing.
The "dog ears" help when aligning the triangles together to create the diamond shape block.
They also help when sewing your diamonds to one another.
IMPORTANT TIP: It is very important that you either press your seams open or all in the same direction on each block. This will help when aligning the blocks for assembly. If you do not press open or in the same direction, the dog ears will be offset.
When sewing your diamonds together, align the middle dog ears.
You will notice that the bottom diamond sticks out slightly. This is correct. The hexagons do not have overage and this is why it sticks out under the hexagon.
Once basted, it's time to quilt your project. To make the stars POP I only quilted in the gray hexagons. Once quilted, trim your project.
Thank you for following along with me today! I hope you enjoyed my Hexagon Star Quilt. Come back soon to see what else will be starting to bloom with Inflorescence Designs...
