HeatnBond Colored Pencil Paper Pieced Skirt Supplies:
Follow the instructions for the paper pieced colored pencil blocks. Since the width of my skirt from seam to seam is 36" and each pencil block is 6", I made a total of 12 colored pencils. However, this may vary depending on the size of dress you are making.
Cut 12 pieces of HeatnBond Non-Woven Fusible Lite Interfacing 1" x 6". Fuse the interfacing to each colored pencil block. This will help keep the seams from fraying.
Using a 1/4" seam allowance, sew 6 colored pencil blocks together in a long strip. Finish the seams using a serger or zig-zag stitch. Repeat this step for the back of your skirt.
To make the skirt, refer to the cutting chart in the Wendy pattern. But first, we need to do a little math before we cut into our fabric.
I wanted the colored pencil strip to "float" about 4 inches from the hem. In order to accomplish this look, I cut 2 hem bands 8" x 36", folded them in half lengthwise with wrong sides together and pressed the fold. Next, I took the skirt's length and subtracted 4 1/2" (hem band plus the pencil border), this is the length you want to cut for the top of the skirt.
With right sides together, pin the colored pencil strip to the hem band and attach using a 1/4" seam allowance. Press the seam down and topstitch.
Pin the top skirt piece to the colored pencil stri[p, right sides together and attach. Press the seam up and topstitch. Repeat these same steps for the back skirt piece.
Finish your skirt per the pattern's instructions and attach bodice.
Send your little off to school looking fabulous and ready to conquer the school year!!
