Garden Applique Pattern

Do you have a garden-loving mom as I do? This free garden themed applique pattern is perfect for personalizing a handmade gift for any dirt and plant loving person in your life. You can add it to a fabric covered notebook as I did, or put it on a zipper pouch, hand towel or even a card! Add some hand embroidery and you have a lovely, thoughtful gift that doesn't take much time at all. This tutorial will show you the steps for applying the applique. Supplies: You will need fabric - I am using pieces from this fat-eighth bundle of Orchard by April Rosenthal for Moda. Garden Applique Pattern Heat n Bond Lite Fusible Adhesive Embroidery Floss I also recommend the Heat N Bond Non-Woven Extra Firm Interfacing for the notebook cover if you are making it (instead of the recommended batting) to give the project some stability without the extra bulk of the batting.

Garden Applique

Adding Applique:

• trace the pattern onto the paper side of the Heat n Bond Lite
• cut around the pattern pieces, leaving a slight margin
• fuse the pattern pieces to the wrong side of the fabric- follow package instructions for temp and steam settings
• cut out pattern pieces along traced lines
• remove paper backing
• place and fuse onto the desired location- again follow package instructions

Stitch around all the applique pieces with your sewing machine. Use a straight stitch or a narrow zigzag stitch. If Desired: transfer the embroidery pattern onto your project. All the stitching on my notebook was done using two threads of embroidery floss and a back stitch, except for the petals of the flowers which used a lazy daisy stitch. *NOTE: if you are sewing the fabric notebook cover, sew all of the cover pieces together first, fuse the Heat n Bond Extra Firm interfacing to the cover, THEN add the applique and embroidery. Add some pens or a candle to make a thoughtful gift.
