Hi Friends! It’s Lisa Ruble from Quilty Zest and today we’re making eye glass cases!

Let me show you what prompted this tutorial:

These are the reading glasses that live in my purse. As you can see, the case they came with has seen better days. So I thought I’d make my own case!
This tutorial includes two different size versions - a smaller one for reading glasses and a larger one for sunglasses. Before starting the assembly process, I recommend folding your outer cut square around your glasses to make sure the size works for you. It’s easy to adjust if needed.
The cases I made use prints from my new Refresh fabric collection from Benartex. These prints are showing up in local quilt shops in July/August 2026! I love how the VersaFoam looks in this project - when you machine quilt it (always use a walking foot!), it creates such great texture. Plus, it’ll protect my glasses.
Here’s what you’ll need (for larger and smaller sizes):(1) 10” square each of 2 printsHeatnBond VersaFoam Single-Sided Fusible Foam Stabilizer
HeatnBond Lite Sewable Iron-On Adhesive Tape
Fabric marking pen

Larger Case Cutting:
From the outer case fabric:(1) 8-½” square
From the lining fabric: (1) 8” squareFrom the VersaFoam:(1) 8-½” square

Make the Larger Case:
Step 1: Using the Pressing Paper to protect your iron and surfaces, fuse the 8-½” outer case square to the VersaFoam square.

Step 2: Using a ruler and fabric marking pen/pencil, draw a diagonal line on the fused fabric. (I did diagonal lines on this case; I also tried one with vertical lines and one with horizontal lines - experiment!)
Step 3: Using a walking foot and coordinating thread, stitch on the drawn line and then continue adding lines across the square. I used the width of the walking foot as my guide. Square up finished piece to 8” square.
Step 4: Place the lining square on top, right sides together and matching raw edges. Mark 3-½” in from the right top corner and 2-½” down from the right top corner. Draw a line to connect the two marks.
Step 5: Cut through both layers on that drawn line. Pin the layers together around the remaining sides.
Step 6: Stitch around the outer edge using a generous ¼” seam allowance. Leave an opening opposite the diagonal edge as shown for turning. Clip corners to reduce bulk.
Step 7: Turn the case right side out. Use a turning tool to carefully poke out corners and smooth edges. Fold and press the opening in (see below for a tip to make securing this opening easier).
Step 8: Fuse a small piece of the Adhesive Tape to one side of the opening. Peel off the paper and fuse to the opposite side to close the opening. (Don’t mind the different fabrics in this photo - it’s the same technique!)

Step 9: Top stitch along the top edge and the diagonal edge a scant ¼” from the edge.
Step 10: Fold the case in half. Use binder clips to secure. Topstitch along the remaining long edges and bottom short edge, stitching through all layers. Stitch back and forth a couple times where the top layer meets the back layer to secure - this section will have the most wear and tear.
It’s just that easy! Your sunglasses case is complete! (And did I mention that the best part of this project is choosing your fabrics?!)
Smaller Case Cutting (for reading glasses):
From the outer case fabric:(1) 7-½” square
From the lining fabric: (1) 7” squareFrom the VersaFoam:(1) 7-½” square
Make the Smaller Case:
Follow the steps for the larger case with a couple changes. After machine quilting, square up unit to 7-½”. In Step 4, measure 3” in and 2-¼” in (see photo below) and draw the line to cut the diagonal.
Here’s the case, right before the final stitching!
These are quick and easy to make, and I’m pretty sure I’ll be making these for my friends!
