Corny the Candy Corn using VersaFoam

by Lisa Ruble on October 09, 2026

Hi Friends! It’s Lisa Ruble from Quilty Zest and I’m sharing another Halloween tutorial - this one for a stuffed candy corn. I named him Corny. Which is probably a corny idea, but…

Here’s what you’ll need:

* Fat eighth each yellow, orange and white and black fabric - I used Mini Cabins Butter, Sparkle Dot Peach, Sparkle Dot White and Party Geese Black from my new Refresh fabric collection from Benartex.

* HeatnBond VersaFoam Single-Sided Fusible Foam Stabilizer

* HeatnBond Lite Sewable Iron-On Adhesive* HeatnBond Lite Quilter’s Edge Iron-On Adhesive Tape

* Pressing Paper

* Fiberfill

Download the templates here.

Cutting:

From Mini Cabins Butter: (2) 3-½” x 7” pieces

From Sparkle Dot Peach: (2) 3” x 7” pieces

From Sparkle Dot White: (2) 3-½” x 7” pieces

From Party Geese Black: (2) 2” x 6” strips and (2) 2” x 5” strips (reserve remainder for applique)

From VersaFoam: (2) 7” x 9” pieces

Make the Stuffed Candy Corn:

Step 1: Lay out and sew together (1) each 3-½” x 7” yellow, 3” x 7” orange and 3-½” x 7” white piece. Sew together to make a candy corn stripe. Make (2).

Step 2: Using Pressing Paper, fuse the VersaFoam piece to the wrong side of the candy corn stripe. Make (2).

Step 3: Using a walking foot, machine quilt each candy cane stripe. I used straight line quilting approximately ½” apart.

Step 4: Cut out the candy corn template shape and lay on a quilted candy corn stripe, making sure there’s a roughly equal amount of each color. Trace around the shape with a fabric marking pen. Cut out.

Step 5: Lay the cut-out candy corn face down on the second quilted candy corn. Position to align the colors between the (2) pieces. Trace the candy corn shape and cut out.

Step 6: Trace the eyes onto the paper side of HeatnBond Lite. Cut out ½” beyond the traced eyes. Fuse onto the wrong side of black fabric. Cut out each eye.

Step 7: Position the eyes on a candy corn shape and fuse in place. Using black thread and a zig zag stitch, sew around the edge of each eye to secure in place.

Step 8: Fold (1) 2” x 6” black strip in half, wrong sides together, and press. Unfold and then fold each long edge in to the center fold. Press. Unfold again and fold (1) short end in. Refold on the pressed lines to create a finished end and pin to secure. Stitch down the length of the folded strip and along the folded edge to create (1) leg. Repeat to make a second leg and (2) arms using the 2” x 5” black strips.

Step 9: Position and pin the raw edge of each arm onto the candy corn shape with eyes. Baste in place ⅛” from candy corn edge to secure arms.

Step 10: Position the second quilted candy corn right sides together on the first candy corn and pin in place. Make sure the loose ends of the arms are tucked inside.

Step 11: Stitch around the candy corn ¼” from the outer edge, stopping and starting along the bottom edge to leave an opening for turning. Back stitch at beginning and end.

Step 12: Turn the candy corn right side out. Cut a small piece of HeatnBond Lite Tape and fuse to the raw edge at the bottom of the back candy corn.

Step 13: Stuff the candy corn with fiber fill. Fold the raw edges at the bottom in, remove the paper from the adhesive tape, and position the legs in the opening. Press the folded edges with the iron to secure and then stitch across the opening, securing the legs in place. You’re done!

Corny is such a fun Halloween friend! You can even use him like a Halloween Elf on the Shelf. Or make a few to share!
