Quilted Canning Mat with NEW Bliss Batting

by Julia Schweri on June 04, 2026

Hello and welcome! It’s Julia from Inflorescence Designs! I’m so joyful you are visiting today! For today's tutorial, I am sharing how to make a Canning Mat with Therm O Web’s Bliss Batting.

What is a canning mat? A canning mat is used when canning/preserving food.

Is it necessary?  While a specific canning mat is not necessary, what is necessary is something to place your hot jars on while packing your food and while the jars are cooling when finished processing.  A hot jar on a cold countertop is a recipe for disaster!

A towel works just fine but a quilted mat looks lovely in your kitchen and is specifically for canning and nothing else (like cleaning up spills or dirty dishes).

So, if you like to preserve food and quilt or are a quilter who knows someone who cans, then this is the project for you!

Supplies:

  • Quilt Top: Your canning quilt top size will depend on how big your surface area is.  I made mine 16” x 9” to fit in the small area where I usually have a towel.
  • Quilt Bottom: this needs to match your quilt top, or I suggest it be larger so when sandwiching your quilt you can see it.
  • Binding: Binding depends on your application method. I use 2” x the perimeter of my quilt + 12”.  For example: my quilt measures 50” around the edge. So I take 50” + 12" to get the binding amount I need (62”).
  • Bliss Batting
  • Size should be slightly larger than your quilt top.

Directions:

  1. Begin by cutting or making your quilt top.  This project can be small enough to use a fat quarter!
  1. Next, sandwich your quilt top, Bliss Batting and backing together, basting the layers together with SpraynBond Basting Spray.
  1. Quilt your piece as desired.
  1. Add your binding using your favorite binding method.

Finished!

Thanks for visiting today!
