Big Bow Door Decor with Versa Foam Stabilizer

Welcome! It’s Julia from Inflorescence Designs! I’m so joyful you are visiting today! For today's tutorial, I am sharing how to make a Big Bow Door Decoration using Thermoweb’s NEW VersaFoam!

Thermoweb’s New VersaFoam Foam Stabilizer is a DREAM! It quilts so lovely and I cannot wait to try making bags and other firmer projects with it. However, for today’s tutorial I chose to make something a little more simple.

Supplies:

  • 8” x 17” (Top of Bow)
  • 29” x 9” (Bottom of Bow)
  • 1” x 9” (Connector)
  • 36, 3.5” blocks for top of bow
  • 30, 3.5” blocks for bottom of bow
  • 30.5” x 9.5” fabric for back of bow
  • 4.5” x 9” Connector Strip

Directions:

  1. Begin by making the top portion of the bow.  I made mine patchwork, however this piece can also be a single piece of fabric.  It needs to measure 36.5” x 9.5” in total.  If creating patchwork like the one shown in the photos, use 12, 3.5” squares sewn in three long rows, for a total of 36, 3.5” squares.  Sew those long rows together to create the necessary 36.5” x 9.5” top bow piece.
  1. Once your top piece is sewn, find the center. Also find the center of the  8” x 17” VersaFoam.  Using SpraynBond Basting Adhesive, adhere the VersaFoam to the top bow piece on the wrong side of the fabric, making sure to align the center points.  If using fusible, simply fuse the VersaFoam to the wrong side of the fabric.

  1. Next, quilt the VersaFoam and fabric.  Be sure to not catch the ends of your bow.
  1. Once quilted, fold over the unquilted ends so that they meet and overlap. The sides will fold over right where the VersaFoam ends. The middle will overlap.  Make sure to fold over with the wrong side facing out.

  1. Next, sew around the edges of the top bow piece.  Sew using a ⅜’ seam.  You can sew all the way around because your opening for turning is in the center.  Once sewn,  turn right side out and press well. Set the top piece aside.
  1. Next, create the bottom of the bow.  Sew together a patchwork of 30, 3.5” blocks.  This grid will be 3 blocks by 10 blocks.  If choosing to not make a patchwork bow, the size of your fabric needs to be 30.5” x 9”.
  1. Center and adhere the 29” x 9” VersaFoam to the wrong side of the patchwork.  Quilt.
  1. Next, place the backing of the bow, together with the bottom patchwork, right sides together.  Sew around leaving a 3” gap for turning.  Sew using a ⅜” seam.  I like to make my opening near the center on the long edge as this will ensure it is tucked up in the folds when finished.

  1. When finished sewing, turn right side out and press really well.  Turn the edges under the gap opening.  If you want to close the gap, I recommend HeatnBond Hem Adhesive.

  1. To create the connector piece, press the connector fabric piece in half lengthwise. Fold the raw edges to the center and press again.  Align the Versa Foam in the center, centered over the pressed middle line.  Fold over the outer pressed edges.  Sew along each side.  I also sewed two more decorative rows of stitches.

  1. Gather up the top and bottom bow pieces. I like to use a rubberband to hold them in place.  It keeps the folds lovely and it allows you to set your work down.

  1. Wrap the connector piece around both the top and bottom bow pieces. Fold under the raw edge of the top connector end.

  1. Using Fabric Fuse Liquid Adhesive, glue the connector piece together.  I also add a dab to the back to fuse the connector piece to the bow itself.  Using clips, hold the pieces together until glue is set.  Optional:  Fabric Fuse Liquid Adhesive is really strong, however, if you are concerned or if your bow will be out in the elements, I suggest sewing the connector piece together as well.

To hang, simply slip any wire or hanger under the connector piece.

Thanks for visiting today! I hope you enjoy Thermoweb’s NEW VersaFoam as much as I do.  I cannot wait to try making more amazing things with it.

Starting to bloom by choosing JOY~ Julia
