A Spoonful of Sugar and a Sweet Tote Bag

Happy Spring my friends!  This is Dori again with The Red Feedsack!  I’ve been so excited about the new fabric collection by Jennifer Long called A Spoonful of Sugar!  It is such a gorgeous collection.

I chose four fabrics to work with and decided to make a sweet tote bag!  I originally had another project in mind but I’ve been loving using Thermoweb’s new VersaFoam Stabilizer for sewing all the bags and so this was my choice.  My daughter saw it on my sewing table and she said “Can I have this Mom?”.  Best compliment ever, right?

I’ve used all three of the VersaFoam products:  the VersaFoam Sew-In, the VersaFoam Single Sided Fusible and the VersaFoam Double Sided Fusible.  For this project I used the Single Sided Fusible which I do think might be my favorite.

The pattern I chose to use for the Spoonful Of Sugar Tote is my own pattern and I have not perfected it to the point of being comfortable sharing it; however, a pattern very close to it is the Montana Tote.  This is definitely for intermediate sewists as it has a few tricky parts to it.

Don’t you love the fabric sewn to the cotton webbing for the handles?  Here is a little insider tip for you…  I cut my fabric to 1.25” and carefully folded over a ¼ inch along both long edges, using my iron as I went.  Once I had the edges folded over and pressed well, I cut a length of HeatnBond Lite Iron-On Adhesive tape to the same length as my handles.  I carefully ironed that to the back of the long fabric strip, fully adhering those folded edges.  Then I removed the paper backing and ironed the entire fabric strip to the cotton webbing.  That made the final topstitching go perfectly and also it gave the handles a really nice stability.  I don’t think I’ll ever be without this adhesive tape again!   (And this gorgeous floral in the Spoonful of Sugar collection is absolutely my favorite!!!)

This tote bag is really large and has so many pockets.  I really enjoyed using the different fabrics for the pockets on the inside.  It’s such fun to open the tote and see the different fabrics and how they blend together.

I really enjoy when I make a large tote like this one, to always make the accessories to go in it!  I’ve made a covered notebook, a quilted pencil/pen pouch, an eyeglass case and a tissue pouch.  This fabric just made all of it special.

What could be better than pairing beautiful fabric with Thermoweb products?  I can’t think of anything!  Happy spring sewing my friends!
