In our house, fall means football season is like a holiday at our house. Our fantasy football drafts are done and we are sitting on pins and needles waiting to see how our players will perform in the opening week of the National Football League season. To celebrate our "self-made" holiday, it's Carla here from Creatin' in the Sticks to share a fun football quilt block that I used to make a scrap-busting quilt with assorted colored footballs. It's sure to score a touchdown with the biggest fans. HEATnBOND® High Loft Fusible Fleece interfacing adds just the right amount of dimension to the football applique.

Instructions for 1- 6” finished quilt block Supplies: 1 - 4” x 7” HEATnBOND® High Loft Fusible Fleece interfacing 1 – 1 ½” x 3” HeatnBond® Lite Fusible Adhesive Fabric: white: 2 – 1” x 4” 1 -1 ½” x 3” for laces 1 - 6 ½” x 6 ½” for background purple: (this example) 2 – 1 ½” x 4” 1 – 4” x 4” Other Supplies: Basic sewing supplies – scissors, thread, iron, needles, pins, etc. Permanent marker Pattern for the football and laces – The Free PDF pattern is Here Sewing **All seams are stitched at ¼” unless otherwise stated Trace the lace pattern to the back (paper side) of the 1 ½” x 3” piece of HeatnBond® Lite Fusible Adhesive. Bond the 1 ½” x 3” piece of HeatnBond® Lite Fusible Adhesive to the back of the white 1 ½” x 3” for laces. Cut out the laces. Fold the 4” x 4” piece of purple fabric in half and then in half again to find the center. Center the laces on the purple square and fuse according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Sew football pieces together as laid out in the picture above. Sewing the 2 - 1” x 4” white pieces to the 4” x 4” purple piece and then sewing the 2 – 1 ½” x 4” purple pieces to the white at the ends to form a 4” x 7” block. Stitch around the laces with a straight, zigzag, or blanket stitch in matching thread or use black for a more whimsical look. Trace the football with a permanent marker in the center of the non-fusible side of the 4” x 7” HEATnBOND® High Loft Fusible Fleece interfacing and cut a 2” slit in the middle. Now place the fleece and pieced block together with the fusible side of the fleece down on top of the right side of block. The traced side of the fleece is up and this the stitching line. Stitch around the traced football, backstitching at the beginning and the end. Trim close to stitching and use the 2” slit to turn the football right side out. Carefully push the edges out. Find the diagonals of the 6 ½” x 6 ½” background square by folding in half by forming a triangle and folding in half again to form a smaller triangle. Center the football on the background square by using the diagonal pressed lines to center the points and the center lace. Bond the football to the background square following the manufacturer’s instructions. Stitch around the football now or wait to do this as part of the quilting for a quilt. This quilt is 20” x 20” For this wall hanging, make 9 blocks. Just print the 9 laces (pattern sheet) on 1 sheet of Heat-N-Bond® EZ Print Lite and cut them out. Add the sashing and cornerstones and you have a fall quilt top. There are 12 brown sashing pieces - 6 ½” x 1 ½” and 4 white cornerstones - 1 ½” x 1 ½” Use SpraynBond® Basting Adhesive to sandwich the top with backing fabric and StitchnSew™ Sew-In High Loft Fleece. Quilt as desired and bind the edges.
