10-Minute Fabric Gift Card Holders

by Lisa Ruble on May 21, 2026

Hi! It’s Lisa Ruble from Quilty Zest and I’ve got a quick and easy project to share with you! It’s graduation and end-of-the-school-year season, and I decided to make fabric gift card holders - perfect for holding (and giving) gift cards to your favorite teachers and graduates!

The best news? These gift card holders are super fast to make - I timed myself, and from choosing fabric to sliding my gift card in, the stopwatch said 8 minutes, 32 seconds. So whether you’re making just one or sewing multiple assembly-line style, you’ll be done before you know it!

Let’s take a look at what you’ll need - of course I used my Nature Unfiltered fabrics from Benartex. :) Thermoweb’s new VersaCraft Fusible Interfacing added just the right amount of body to these gift card holders without feeling too stiff.

Materials (per gift card holder):

Cutting:

From the VersaCraft:(1) 4” x 5” piece

Make the Gift Card Holder

  1. Choose your fabric pieces and decide which will be the outside and which will be the lining.

2. Center the VersaCraft piece on the wrong side of the outer fabric rectangle and fuse in place. Your fabric piece should extend ¼” on all sides of the interfacing. Tips: Use Pressing Paper to protect your iron and to help the iron glide. Also, have patience when fusing the VersaCraft: I held my iron in place for about 12-15 seconds.

3. Position the fabric pieces right sides together, matching raw edges, and stitch around the outer edge using a ¼” seam allowance (this will be just outside the interfacing edge. Leave a 3” opening along a long edge for turning. Tip: Backstitch at the beginning and end of the opening to secure the stitches.

4. Clip the corners to eliminate bulk, making sure not to cut through the stitched lines. Before turning the fabric sandwich right sides out, use the iron to press the seam allowance open along the opening. This will make finishing this edge easier at the end.

5. Turn right side out and use a turning tool to gently poke out corners and crease edges.

6. After turning is complete, press again to flatten and ensure folded open edges are tucked in the opening.

7. Fold the gift card holder almost in half so a generous ¼” of the lining shows in the back. Make sure edges are straight so the amount of lining shown is even across the top. Use binding clips to secure the folded edges.

8. Using a coordinating thread, stitch along the (3) open edges (not the folded bottom). Stitch ⅛” from the edges - this will ensure the open edges on the side are secured as you stitch. Backstitch at the beginning and the end. That’s it! Tip: Take your time and stitch carefully so your stitch lines look straight. Using matching thread helps too!

Of course, I couldn’t stop with just one! Keep reading for some additional ideas.

Make It Your Own!

After making the basic version, I started playing around with some embellishments. Have some fun playing around to make your gift card holders unique!

Decorative Stitching: I used a contrasting thread and a decorative stitch to add some detail to the gift card holder. Do this after step 6.

Fussy Cutting: I fussy-cut a star when I cut my 4-½” x 5-½” rectangle so that it would be centered on the front of the holder. To do so, you’ll want to center the motif from left to right and then center it in the 2-½” area at a long end of the rectangle.

Piecing: And, of course, there’s piecing! Piece your fabric scraps together in any way you like and then trim to measure 4-½” x 5-½”. Just remember that less than half of your design will show on the “front” of the gift card holder.

I hope you enjoy using these handmade gift card holders to spread a little end-of-school-year joy, either to your favorite teachers or graduates! Tuck a gift card to your favorite local coffee shop, book store, or even quilt shop inside - an easy gift idea!
